BFC midfielder Shankar to train with Italian club

Twenty-Year-Old To Spend Three Weeks With Lega Pro Side Unione Sportiva Cremonese

Bengaluru FC midfielder Shankar Sampingiraj will be Italy-bound on Monday where he will train with Lega Pro Prima Divisione side Unione Sportiva Cremonese for a little less than a month. The trip, aimed at providing the youngster with exposure, comes on the back of winger Udanta Singh’s ongoing stint with English League Two side Oxford United FC.“Sending Shankar to Italy reiterates our stand in giving our boys the best chance to improve, be it at the club or outside of it. We went to watch Udanta at Oxford and from our conversations with him, he seems to have learned a great deal in a short time. We are certain that Shankar will have a similar experience at Cremonese,” said Parth Jindal, CEO of Bengaluru FC.

The twenty-year-old had an impressive last season with the Blues where he was a key cog in Ashley Westwood’s plans and even ended up scoring three goals which included a last-minute winner against Maziya S&RC in the AFC Cup at home and a 14-second finish against Pune FC.

“I am delighted at the chance handed to me by Bengaluru FC and I am keen to make it count. It’s been a measured growth for me at this club and this stint is another big step in that direction. I’m looking forward to it and I’m sure I will return a better player,” said the lad from Bengaluru.

Cremonese, competing in the third tier of the Italian League, has been home to players like Gianluca Vialli and Anders Limpar and last competed in the Serie A in 1996. Based in the city of Cremona, the club is more than a hundred years old.
