Chennaiyin FC hosted Mumbai City FC in today’s encounter of Hero Indian Super League season 3 at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Chennai.
The match ended with a 1-1 draw, both teams taking away one point. Both the goals were scored in the second half of the game. Jeje scored for Chennaiyin FC and Costa for Mumbai City FC. The stadium was filled with over 22,000 spectators chanting for their teams all the way long.
Chennaiyins kicked off the game pretty good with their first first on the goal in 5th min. Jerry Lalrinzuala took the first shot of the game from distance testing Mumbai’s keeper, Albino Gomes, who was at the right place to get it in his safe hands. Game went on with an end-to-end action. Gomes was tested again by Maurizio Peluso with a direct free kick in 17th min, Gomes had his safe hands on that as well with a save.
Mumbai’s first real chance came through Forlan in 36th min, when he had the ball, time and space. His shot went just over the crossbar. With this the score line stayed unchanged with 0-0 at half time.
Second half kicked off with Channaiyin FC testing Mumbai City FC’s keeper again. In 49th min, Raphael Augusto’s long range shot was deflected by Mumbai’s defense for a corner. The corner result in the change in the scoreboard. Peluso’s corner was headed into the goal beautifully by Jeje at near post and making it 1-0. Jeje had another opportunity to get himself on the score sheet, but his try to guide a cross from Lalrinzuala from left flank to the goal came down for a goal kick. Cafu took the first chance of the second half for the visitors in 67th min. Cafu’s shot from out side the box went straight in the hands of Kerr. In 71st min Dudu had a glorious chance to get his team a 2-0 lead, but Gomes was quick enough to come off his line make a save. It was the goal scorer again to open it up for Dudu, with a delightful ball inside the box, but the scoreline stayed 1-0.
The equalizer came in the 88th min, from a stunning shot by Costa, from over 30 mts from the goal hitting the inside of the far post and going back to the nets. Kerr had no chance to get his hands on to it for a save. This was the last attempt on the goal. Both the teams pushed themselves in search of another goal, but had to settle down with draw. Mumbai City FC got their first ever point against Chennaiyin FC.
At full time the score was 1-1.
