East Bengal and Aizawl FC share a point each in the opening game of the Hero I-league 2017 campaign.

East Bengal hosted Aizawl FC  in the yesterday’s inaugural match of this year’s Hero I-league at Barasat Stadium in Kolkata.

Aizawl FC took the lead in the closing mins of the first half, with Gurwinder Singh unfortunately hit his own net. Gurwinder Singh’s own goal put the hosts trailing by a goal at half time. In the absence of Arnab Mondal, Mohammed Rafique was the captain and had to lead the team for the home side.

East Bengal had a pretty shaky start with an own goal and played defensive for the rest of the game as the visitors tried creating opportunities for the second goal. In the 34th min of the game, Wedson Anselme had a chance to put his team on the lead, but Albino Gomes made the save by quickly moving off the goal line. 2 mins later, Alfred Jaryan along with  Kamo Stephane Bayi, from the left wing was able to create chance for the Ivory Coast striker, but failed to connect again. Half time score line was 0-1 in the favor of the visitors.

Aizawl FC had their first chance of the second half to double their lead. Lalmuankima’s corner found Alfred’s header for a header which was denied by the cross bar. Minutes later Anwar Ali saved it for the hosts by making an important tackle when Jaryan and Kamo linked up well and seemed threatening again. Hosts defense did not combine well as the visitors were able to create few more chances.

Just in the closing minutes of the game, Bukenya saved the home side by heading the ball into the goal and getting that first point for his side of the season. At full time scores stayed level with a goal each and both the teams sharing a point each.

Stay tuned for all the updates of the league.
