Churchill Brothers hosted Bengaluru FC in the Hero I-League 2017 campaign at Tilak Maidan in Goa on Friday evening.
Churchill Brothers faced the defending Champions Bengaluru FC and recorded their first win in the series by scoring 2 goals and the opposition scoring 1 goal. They have moved to seventh place with four points from five matches.
Churchill Started with a 4-5-1 formation and Bengaluru with a 3-4-3. Brandon Fernandes and Seriton Fernandes were replaced by Surchandra Singh and Surabuddin Mollick in the home team.
The game was very stodgy in the first 20 minutes. It started pacing up at the next minute when Fulganco Cardozo received a yellow card for bringing down the forward player of Bengaluru FC. Fortunately this was inside the box for the defending champions as they got a penalty kick. Captain Sunil Chhetri scored a goal in the penalty kick and opened up the scoreboard for his team.
At the 31st minute, Juan Antonio González Fernández was given a yellow card and 2 minutes later Anthony Wolfe cancelled Sunil Chhetri’s goal by scoring beautifully against the opposition. He took advantage of a defensive lapse from John Johnson and used it against him to score past Amrinder who was far away from his line.
The first half ended with an equalizer with the score 1-1.
The second half of the game started with a surprise from Churchill as Chesterpoul Lyngdoh scored a goal at the 53rd minute which gave them the lead. Chesterpoul got on the end of a fantastic through ball from Anthony and proceeded to make space for himself and crossed it past Amrinder. John Johnson was unable to close him down and suffered a blow to the team.
Churchill Brothers who were looking for their first win after drawing against DSK Shivajians. They came back strongly in the second half as they showed lot of urgency in their attacks.
BFC made quick changes in the second half, looking to tie up the score. Their effort did shock Churchill Brothers as the opposition made an amazing shot towards the nets. To their surprise, Amrinder pulled off an amazing save giving his team a lot of confidence. Their confidence developed more when the BFC defender James Johnson recieved a red card in the 84th minute.
Bengaluru tried to tie the score with their 10 men team, but couldn’t conduct it. The game ended with the score, Churchill Brothers 2-1 Bengaluru FC giving Churchill their first win in the I-league, and 7th place on the points table.
