East Bengal took on Mumbai FC at Barasat Stadium on Wednesday in Kolkata, giving the home side a comfortable 2 goal win over the visitors.
The brace from Plaza came in the first half only 7 minutes away from each other (10′,17′).
The first goal came at the 10th minute when a cross from Rahul Bheke was received by Willis Plaza,who chested the ball down and a left footed shot went past the keeper Kunal Sawant who was at full stretch.
Seven minutes later a similar goal from Plaza who received the ball from the other side,courtesy of Lalrindika Ralte from the left wing.Plaza collected the ball despite being covered by multiple defenders,and finished with the left foot again leaving the keeper dead in his tracks.
Mumbai got a couple chances from set pieces but seemed unsure on the pitch.
Second half underwent and strikers Karan Sawhney and Victorino Fernandes were brought on in hopes of getting a goal.
A nasty collision of heads between Narayan Das and Victorino resulted in the latter being taken off the pitch due to a suspected concussion.
At the 63′ minute Mumbai FC found the back of the net and looked like a comeback was underway,but in vain as the linesman had raised his flag after spotting Densill Theobald in an offside position.
At the 75th minute,Robin Singh almost got a goal as he stood in a goal poacher’s position when Rahul Bheke whipped in a cross from the right.
Mumbai felt they were snatched of another goal when a header from Shilton D’Silva was parried by the home keeper Rehenesh off the line,and the visitors argued that the ball had crossed the line.No Goal said the ref.
Trevor Morgan’s side have grabbed 3 more points moving up the table as a struggling Mumbai FC are on the 6th place on the table.
At full-time, the score read 2 – 0 in favor of East Bengal.
