A hard start for the newbies, Odisha FC

Match day 3 saw Jamshedpur FC host ISL newbies Odisha FC at the JRD Tata Sports complex also famously known as ‘The Furnace’.

It was a battle of the Spanish tacticians along with a host of Spanish players on both team sheets. Jerry was back at furnace but in the opposite colors.

The first 10 minutes saw both teams fighting out for the possession of the ball, but the closest chance fell for the visitors when Jerry’s ball into the box was headed agonizingly close to the Jamshedpur’s post by Odisha striker Aridane. Odisha once again came close to scoring when Jerry hit the upright on the 13th minute. But against the run of play, it was Jamshedpur who struck first. A ball bent in by Farukh for Castel was put into his own net by Odisha defender Rana on the 17th minute.

Jamshedpur’s Monroy was the first player to be booked on the 28th minute for a tackle on Xisco. A chance fell to Jamshedpur when Castel’s strike cum cross floated across the face of the goal. Odisha were given a way back into the game when Jairu was sent off for a tackle on Jerry who was on goal. With momentum on their side Odisha equalized on the 40th minute when a first time hit from the center of the box by Aridane found the back of the net. Aridane was causing problems for the central defenders of Jamshedpur while Nandha Kumar and Jerry bombarded the flanks. A full house at the furnace saw both teams level on goals at half time.

Jamshedpur changed formations with Memo coming on at half time and slotting in at center back. The second half however began with Jamshedpur’s Jadhav getting booked for leading in with the arm on Narayan Das.

The 60th minute saw both teams make changes as Bikramjit came on for Vinit and Passi came on for Jadhav. Passi however almost made an instant impact when his shot rolled inches wide of the upright. Minutes later Farukh’s ball across the face of the goal almost found Castel again but this time was cleared by Rana. Odisha’s substitutes combined when Perez put a ball in for Bikramjit whose shot was saved by Subrata Paul on the 67th minute.

Meanwhile 10 men Jamshedpur threatened to score on the 72nd minute when an excellent ball put in by Farukh found Castel, whose shot fizzed wide of the Odisha goal. Jerry’s curling effort was pushed away for a corner by Subrata Paul.

End to end stuff as Aridane scuffed his shot which led to a counter attack by Jamshedpur when Castel played Farukh through on goal who wasted the opportunity trying to feed Castel back.  This game saw contenders for both the ‘Goal of the season’ by Aridane as well as the ‘Miss of the season’ by Farukh. But the host’s determination paid off. On loan Atletico Madrid B striker, Castel, showed his quality when he chipped his shot over Dorronsoro. If anyone deserved a goal, it was Castel for the work he put in the entire game.

Four minutes extra time were added on. Perez found some space at the edge of the box, but his shot was way off target. It ended 2-1 for Jamshedpur who took all three points at full time. A disappointing half for Odisha who failed to utilize their advantage of the extra man. Manager Iriondo got one over his Spanish compatriot Gombau. Farukh however was named the ‘Hero of the Match’ for his excellent performance barring the miss before Castel’s goal.
