Fatorda hosted match day 4 between FC Goa and Chennaiyin FC.
Plenty of new faces for Chennaiyin with 7 players making their debuts. Goa on the other hand had two big names missing with Jahouh and Edu Bedia who were out due to suspension and injuries respectively. Viewers were in for a treat with Goa’s flair in attack and Chennaiyin’s defensive solidity.
Goa as usual began the half by keeping most of the possession and playing out from the back. But the counter from Chennaiyin on the 10th minute almost proved deadly for Goa when Seriton tackled Firtulescu inside the box. The referee however did not point to the spot and waived play on. Lenny saw himself in the referee’s book for a tackle on Jerry on the 14th minute. But the first real chance fell to Len Doungel who was played through by an excellent ball played by Coro only to be saved by Vishal Kaith of CFC. Vishal was once again called in play when Manvir Singh found some space to turn and shot.
The other end of the pitch saw Eli Sabia’s headed effort hit Nawaz and go out for a corner. Another chance fell for Chennaiyin as the new signing Chhangte had his shot saved by Nawaz. But the deadlock was broken on the 30thminute by Goa when Doungel finished off a ball played into the danger area by Manvir. Sabia’s weak clearance hit Doungel and found the back of the net. It was Manvir’s deadly drive into the box that led to the goal. Brandon’s hit from 30 yards out sailed inches above the crossbar. Kaith again blocked a shot from Coro. Kaith was clearly the busier of the two keepers. The referee blew the half time whistle after Dhanpal Ganesh placed his shot way off target. Chennaiyin were clearing playing on the counter and were happy to allow Goa to keep most of the ball.
Thapa was brought on at half time for Dhanpal Ganesh in midfield .Firtulescu almost equalized for Chennaiyin with his left footed curler on the 55th minute. However it was the league’s all-time goal scorer, Coro, who found the back of the net again (62’) for Goa. Manvir released Jackichand on the right flank who found Coro in the middle. Chennaiyin were defending in 6’s and 7’s. However Nawaz was finally called into action on the 72nd minute when his spectacular effort kept Chhangte out.
Minutes later Jacki, freed by Len, absolutely aired his shot. No luck for Chennai as substitute Crivellaro blasted his effort off target. Goa’s domination continued as Brandon found Pena from a set piece whose first time hit beat the visitor’s keeper to put them 3-0 up (81’). It was shambolic defending from the Chennaiyin defense. Lobera however rolled in the changes by bringing on youngsters Princeton, Saviour and Liston towards the backend of the second half.
3 minutes were added on at the end of the second half. It ended GOA 3 – CHENNAI 0 at full time. Seriton was adjudged the ‘Hero of the Match’ for his excellent defensive duties and keeping Chhangte quiet for most of the game.
