A penalty brace from Roy Krishna and a late goal from Edu Garcia ensured Atletico de Kolkata took all three points on a rainy evening at the Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata. The victory now takes Lopes Habas’ Kolkata on the top of the Hero Indian Super League after the match 19.
Running high on their victories against newcomers Odisha FC and Hyderabad FC and the goalless draw against champions Bengaluru FC, Jamshedpur made a formation change from a 3-4-3 to a 4-2-3-1. For the hosts, Jayesh Rane came in for Pranoy Halder in the midfield after their narrow away victory at Chennai.
Jamshedpur missed taking an early lead after the eight minutes when Piti turned Rane inside out on the left-wing and to found Farukh Choudhary on the far post, only to see him denied by the crossbar.
Unfortunately for the men of steel, they would not be able to see more of such opportunities after they lost Piti to injury in the 38th minute. Atletico had a penalty denied two minutes later by the referee after Aitor Monroy had shoved Javi Hernandez inside the penalty area.
Rane had a chance to give ATK the lead before both sides went into the dressing room at halftime, but his powerful drive flew high.
Ten minutes into the second half, Tiri’s last-ditch challenge to stop Roy Krishna from scoring lead to the referee pointing to the spot. The Figi international did not make any mistake as he stepped up and slotted the spot-kick calmly past Subrata Paul in the Jamshedpur goal.
The men in steel’s centre backs could not cope against Krishna as in the 71st minute he was brought down by Memo. Krishna stepped up and scored again from the spot despite Paul going the right way.
Jamshedpur was handed a lifeline in the 82nd minute when Castel was elbowed by Anas and the referee pointed to the spot for the third time. Castel stepped up and pulled one back bringing the match to a thrilling finish.
As the men in steel started to push forward for a late equalizer, ATK was able to find spaces on the counter. However, this time around Krishna turned provider as his first touch set up Spanish winger Edu Garcia who showed calmness as he chipped past the oncoming Subrata Paul.
ATK now sits on the top of the table after giving Jamshedpur their first defeat of the season. They’ll look to continue winning when they Visit Odisha on the 24 November. The men of steel now sit on the fourth spot will continue their campaign after the international break when they visit Goa on the 26 November.
