Odisha FC played out a goalless draw in their first home game on Sunday, as Atletico de Kolkata fly up to the top spot in the Indian Super League.
Indian Super League resumed after the International break, with the help of an inspired performance against Mumbai FC and a goalless draw against Kerala Blasters, confident Odisha stepped into the Shree Shiv Chhatrapati Sports Complex in Pune with a desire to upset the high flying ATK. On the other hand, the visitors had a three match winning streak under their belt.
It started with a powerful attack right in the 2nd minute for the visitors, but the hosts were not short of any spark. Odisha kept on counter attacking at every possible opportunity they seized. ATK pressed hard to maintain their momentum which came from the 10 goals they have scored this season. Contrarily Gombau’s men negotiated every attack gracefully and were ready for every challenge thrown by Habas & Co.
Odisha FC had an opportunity to take a lead twice in the 15th and the 24th minute. Nandakumar Sekar lead both the attacks from the right wing for the hosts. Javier Hernandez kept of testing the Odisha goalkeeper. Unfortunately neither of teams managed to score a goal in the first half of play. It would be fair to say that visitors were content by holding back to see off the time.
The 2nd half started with a replacement of Anas Edathodika who was trying to make an impact after returning from an injury. ATK’s substitute Jobby Justin’s attack was kept out by Nandakumar in the 62nd minute. Shortly Aridane Santana’s effort was denied by the ATK defense unit. Both sides continued to examine each others defense with constant attacks.
With a series of corners in the dying moments of the game ATK were desperate to end the deadlock, but a combination of poor finishing and excellent defensive game saved the day for Odisha. Failing to penetrate the respective defense, the match ended with a goalless draw.
